Roadworks
Details
The works are part of the Kฤpiti Coast District Council's Speed Management Plan and are co-funded by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA). The project is focused on safety improvements and creating a more accessible environment for all road users, with an estimated value of approximately NZ $1.5 million.
Key improvements include:
- Reconstruction of four existing zebra crossings into raised safety platforms.
- Conversion of one existing Kea crossing to a flush pedestrian zebra crossing.
- Construction of one new pedestrian crossing
- Footpath extensions and other safety improvements along Elizabeth Street.
There may be traffic delays on your way to and from the Club while this work is undertaken.
Notice of AGM and Nominations for 2026 Committee
Our Constitution requires the four longest serving members of the Committee to retire at the AGM and - if they so wish - to seek re-election. Those Committee members are Graham Cheater, Chris Farrow, Rae Lutman (Secretary) and Margaret Gordon (Treasurer). I'm sorry to report that Chris had decided that the time has come for him to stand down, but I'm pleased to say that Graham, Rae and Margaret have all agreed to seek re-election.
Although replacements for both Chris and Helen have already been identified, the Constitution still requires the Committee to call for nominations to fill the positions which will technically become vacant. These nominations must be received by the Secretary by 19th January 2026. You may nominate yourself or (with their agreement) another member. No special form is required: an email to Rae at waikanaebridge@gmail.com is sufficient.
That's all from me for 2025, except to wish you a very happy Christmas and all the best for 2026.
I look forward to seeing you all back at the Club in the New Year.

Learning and Development
- Saturday afternoon sessions with a short presentation, an experienced player playing at each table to provide advice and afternoon tea. This format has proved very popular at Wellington Club. This could be run through July and August.
- Short presentations prior to a bridge session. Topics such as scoring, reverses, leads etc where the concepts can be introduced reasonably quickly. They would probably be on Thursday afternoon once a month - players can bring their lunch - have the presentation and then play.
- Improvers lessons - as in previous years these lessons will be offered to meet demand. Three sessions in April are initially proposed, with a possible second series later in the year.

Craig Jackson was in second place with 49 points.
Importantly, this is the third consecutive year in which a Waikanae player has won this title, and the second consecutive year in which a Waikanae player has also placed second.
Very well done gentlemen!

I regret to announce that Maureen Creasy passed away on 25th November.

Melbourne Cup Day
Waikanae Junior Pairs
I would like to thank everybody who contributed to a great day, but in particular:
- Chris Farrow for his excellent organisation of the event and for also handling the scoring (which was not without incident!)
- Anne Ricketts for directing in her usual calm and relaxed manner
- Vicky Young and Roz King for the catering
- Rae Lutman, Ady Dale and Fiona McDonald-Bates for their general assistance and running the bar
The event was won by the novice pairing of Miriam Tankersley and Victoria Liddicoat from Palmerston North - a great effort from such a young pairing. In second place were Julie Affleck and Steve Parsons from Otaki, and 3rd were our own Di Andrews and Phil Gavey.
Outside the top three, the top Novice/Novice pair were David Chalmers (Waikanae) and Corinda Taylor (Paraparaumu) and the top Junior/Novice pair were Ellie Molloy and Angus Kirtlan (Hutt).

Looking for a Home
Anita Humphrey is trying to find a new home for a dog, Millie, whose owner recently passed away.
Anita writes:
Millie is nine years old and has been used to life with an older gentleman who gave her lots of love and attention — though not as much in recent times. None of his family are able to take her, so we’re hoping to find her a new home.
Millie would suit a quiet household, ideally with no cats (she likes to chase them!) and someone who can offer her the companionship she’s used to. She enjoyed regular walks and is a gentle, affectionate wee dog who will likely feel a bit disoriented for a while.
If you, or perhaps someone you know, perhaps has recently lost a dog and isn’t looking for a puppy, please get in touch with me. I’d love to see her go to a caring home rather than to HUHA or the SPCA.
Can anyone help?
Melbourne Cup Day
Next Monday we celebrate Melbourne Cup Day, which coincides with our monthly afternoon tea.
For our new players, to enter into the Cup fever, you may choose to dress up.
There are prizes for best dressed, female and male, and for the best hat.
You may like to place some bets, $2.00, on the horses, prior to the start of bridge.
Please come along and join in the fun!
